Embracing a new path: Older workers and the rewarding journey of care work

At Oxford Aunts just under a third of our carers are over 50. This reflects the growing trend of older adults finding purpose and fulfilment in the world of care.

Meet Robyn, an Oxford Aunts live-in carer

Robyn’s journey is a testament to how a change in career later in life can bring new meaning and satisfaction. Here’s what she shared about her experience:

“My experience with Oxford Aunts has been very good. I’ve always had a placement, and when I’ve needed help, they’ve been very supportive. I have always felt appreciated and valued by OA.”

Robyn, who spent over 20 years as a teacher, found herself at a crossroads after the passing of her brother three years ago. This life-changing event prompted her to think more deeply about how she wanted to spend her time, and she found herself drawn to caregiving. With OA, Robyn has been able to use her interpersonal skills and compassion to provide companionship, plan activities, and even build bonds with the families of her clients.

“I enjoy adding meaning to the client’s life in the form of companionship and activities, such as walks and games. I also enjoy getting to know the family.”

Her story highlights how older carers can bring a wealth of life experience to their roles, providing deep empathy, patience, and understanding. Robyn’s background in education, for instance, has equipped her with valuable skills that enhance her ability to connect with and support her clients. We know the transition to care work can be challenging, we take care of everything to ensure you have the support you need to thrive in your role.

“I am very comfortable and happy with the company culture at OA. I find that they are enthusiastic about caring and people. They give you the space to make mistakes and learn from them.”

For many people, care work can be a rewarding and fulfilling second career. A growing number of older adults are discovering the joy and purpose that comes with caring for others. Robyn’s story reminds us that sometimes, life’s most meaningful moments come from taking a bold new path.
