The importance of mental health at Oxford Aunts

Life can be overwhelming at times, and it’s important to recognise when you need support. For our carers, who often face emotional challenges due to the nature of their role, the additional impact on their mental health can mean extra support is needed. At Oxford Aunts (OA), we’re dedicated to creating a healthy and supportive work environment to help you manage and maintain your mental wellbeing. Here’s how we can support you, by taking care of everything, we offer 24/7 emergency support so you will never feel you are on your own.

If you start to notice a change in your emotional well-being or are feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’ve created multiple ways for you to connect with us:

Monthly catch-ups and 1:1 meetings: These regular check-ins offer a chance to discuss how you’re feeling, review your workload, and talk through any stressors you’re experiencing. It’s a time dedicated to you and your wellbeing.
Assistance Programme: Sometimes, it’s easier to talk to someone outside the organisation. Our Assistance Programme provides confidential, independent support 24/7. You can access it anytime, by phone, email, or online, to get advice, resources, and counselling for any challenges in your life, personal or professional.

Ongoing training and development

Feeling unprepared or lacking confidence in your role can put a strain on your mental health. At OA, we believe in providing comprehensive training to help you feel capable and confident:

Initial five-day training course: Every carer in our team starts their journey with our essential training to build the right skills and confidence for their role.
Specialised training for complex conditions: If your role involves caring for clients with complex needs, you’ll receive additional training to ensure you have the skills and knowledge required.
Yearly refresher courses: We offer annual online training updates to keep you informed and confident in your ability to perform at your best.

Building a community for support

We know that sometimes the best support comes from peers who understand your challenges. That’s why we’ve created our Carer Community, a forum where our carers can share experiences, advice, and support:
Carer wellbeing group: This new addition to our community is led by our Admiral Nurse, Dr. Jane Pritchard. Jane shares valuable insights on maintaining your mental and physical health, such as the importance of exercise, a balanced diet, and proper sleep, along with tips to managing stress.

Our tips to help you keep on top of your mental health

Here are some of the key steps you should be prioritising for the sake of your physical, emotional, and mental health:
