Your guide to starting a career in domiciliary care with Oxford Aunts

With so many career options out there, finding a job that’s both fulfilling and offers opportunities to grow can be hard to find.

If you’re eager to make a real impact in people’s lives and want a career with purpose, joining Oxford Aunts as a domiciliary carer could be just what you’re looking for.

A career in care is not just about a job. It’s about showing compassion, providing support, and really making a difference. Whether it’s helping someone with daily activities, offering emotional support, or simply being a friendly face, a career in care provides a deep sense of fulfilment and purpose.

Wondering what experience you need?

No professional experience in care? No problem! We’re now recruiting hourly carers with no professional experience needed. If you’re a caring individual with at least three months of care experience in a personal setting only, we’d love to hear from you! We’ve recently launched a new training programme designed for those interested in working in care, even if they have little or no experience. The 16-week programme includes the following steps:

Step 1: Attend a 1 week induction, where you’ll learn the basics of care work. Once you successfully complete the induction, you’re ready for step 2,

Step 2: Participate in a minimum of 12 hours of shadowing shifts. During this time, you’ll work alongside senior carers, learning essential tasks like manual handling and medication support. After completing these hours, you will then…

Step 3: Be shadowed by a senior carer, where you will take full responsibility for the care call. Through these weeks your mentor will be assessing your skills and competencies, ready for you to be signed off at 16 weeks.

Step 4: Your 16-week review, your care certificate and all supporting documents will be thoroughly reviewed to ensure you’re confident and capable in your role. This process will confirm that you are fully prepared to work independently!

Ella recently started on our step into the care programme, without any professional care experience.

How are you finding it so far Ella?

“It’s really good, I’m learning new things and meeting new people everyday. I’m enjoying getting to know the clients, learning more about them and what they’ve done in their life.”

And why did you decide to move into care?

“I have a lot of empathy and enjoy making a genuine connection with people. I wanted to be that friendly face for someone and to provide comfort.”

How has your time at Oxford Aunts been so far?

“The work environment is really supportive, and the focus is always on delivering the best care for the client. If you’re not sure exactly what to do or where to find a place there’s always someone you can call and it is all written on a daily care plan of where to find everything.”

This is a fantastic opportunity if you’re eager to start a career in care but don’t have previous experience – just like Ella! At OA, we take care of everything, so embarking on your new career only takes a few simple steps.
